Imagine the consequences of a simple data entry mistake in a medical setting. Maybe an employee accidentally hits a two instead of a one as they enter a patient’s weight, or perhaps they mistakenly age the patient by a year — or even worse, maybe they forget to enter critical information at all.
Although these human errors might seem small, they can have huge repercussions for a patient. Their care might be seriously delayed in some cases. In others, the wrong dosage might be prescribed. Fast and accurate patient identity verification is essential to making sure patients are provided with timely, safe, and effective care.
The Importance of Accurate Patient Verification
Avoiding delayed care and preventing significant negative consequences, such as injury, are two of the biggest factors that highlight the importance of accurate patient verification. However, these aren’t the only reasons why accurate ID verification is important. It helps mitigate insurance fraud and prescription abuse, in addition to safeguarding sensitive patient information from compromise.
Let’s take a closer look at how crucial accurate patient identification is to positive healthcare outcomes.
Reducing Medical Errors
Accurate patient verification plays a huge role in ensuring that medical records are correctly matched to the right patient. If a 5' 2”, 110-lb woman’s records get swapped with the records of a 6’ 0”, 140-lb woman, healthcare providers may not be able to give the appropriate treatment and could even cause serious harm to the patient.
On top of that, accurate patient verification prevents the occurrence of duplicate records, which allows both patients and healthcare providers to get a more coherent and comprehensive picture of patient histories. It also eliminates common mistakes created by simple typos or failure to hit a key on a keyboard.
Enhancing Patient Safety
Patient safety is paramount when it comes to healthcare and ideal outcomes. Without accurate identity verification, patients are at serious risk of receiving incorrect treatments, medications, and dosages. These can create a snowball effect ranging from delayed treatment to serious medical injury.
On the other hand, reducing the rate of verification errors drastically lowers the risk of adverse events that occur due to misidentification. Having access to an accurate and comprehensive history of a patient’s relevant information helps healthcare providers deliver the most up-to-date care to patients, regardless of whether they have a temporary relationship with the patient — such as a shift nurse or resident — or an established one, like a primary care physician.
Preventable errors cost lives every year, but using accurate patient verification can stop these mistakes from happening in the first place.
The Role of Digital ID Verification in Healthcare
It’s important to understand that not all identity verification is created equally, however. There are several reasons why digital ID verification is preferable to manual verification.
Efficiency and Accuracy
Digital ID verification allows for confirming patient identities in real time. Instead of manual review, which often requires hours or sometimes even days of waiting, healthcare teams can rest assured that a patient’s details are correct in a matter of seconds. Saving time on identity verification lets these teams focus on delivering quick, excellent care.
Digital ID verification also takes human error out of the equation. Manual verification is prone to mistakes by its very nature, whereas digital verification automates many of the tasks that tend to cause the most trouble.
Enhancing Data Security and Compliance
Another major benefit of digital ID verification over manual verification is that the former offers much better compliance with HIPAA regulations. Confirming patient identities manually opens up too much potential for HIPAA violations, and more importantly, it’s a lot more difficult to secure sensitive patient data with manual methods of verification.
Digital ID verification, on the other hand, provides far more robust security around confidential data, ensuring that companies don’t fall into noncompliance — even unintentionally. On top of that, it provides advanced encryption and security through features like AI algorithms that actively search for and mitigate fraud. Digital ID verification solutions make it that much harder for bad actors to commit a data breach.
How VouchedRx Improves Patient Outcomes
So how does VouchedRx improve patient outcomes? One way is through its 99.58% accuracy rate, which ensures that healthcare providers receive the correct information and that patients receive the most relevant treatments.
Another way is through its AI-powered features, such as an AI algorithm that analyzes patient photographs to confirm they match their identifying documents. VouchedRx also has the ability to integrate data from a variety of sources to cross-check and verify patient information. This way, healthcare providers have access to a patient’s comprehensive history, rather than spotty data that doesn’t paint the full picture and might even overlook important details.
Lastly, VouchedRx integrates seamlessly with other existing healthcare systems, so companies aren’t wasting valuable time on harsh learning curves or implementation. Instead, they can take that time back and focus it on the patients, cutting down on extensive delays that can negatively impact health and recovery time.
Ensure Accurate Patient Verification With VouchedRx
Patients can’t receive top-tier care if their information isn’t correct, and healthcare providers can’t spend the time making sure patients get individualized, timely treatment without having access to comprehensive histories. Beyond that, healthcare organizations risk their reputations or even their licenses to operate if preventable errors cause them to violate HIPAA regulations by compromising patient data.
VouchedRx provides a powerful answer to all of these challenges. Not only does VouchedRx ensure that you can count on accurate patient identification, it cuts down wait times from hours to seconds, helps detect and mitigate fraud, and — most importantly — brings much better outcomes for your patients.
