Google has rolled out selfie video, a new fallback sign-in option that lets users record guided head movements to create a biometric reference for account recovery. The feature complements, rather than replaces, passkeys, recovery contacts, and backup codes, and addresses a real pain point: Gartner estimates 20-50% of help desk calls are password- or access-related, with Forrester pricing a single manual reset at $87.
Unlike passkeys, which rely on public-key cryptography that never exposes a reversible identifier, selfie video works through biometric pattern-matching. It stores a facial template and compares it against a fresh scan at recovery time. That distinction matters for privacy: it's not a zero-knowledge proof, and Google has said it may reuse the underlying biometric data to train facial recognition and age estimation models across its services.
